Also, I was re-reading his conversation with Smoker and Doffy at the end of PH. It makes it seem as if Kuzan was legitimately disillusioned with the WG and is now following his own path.

Kuzan could simply be wanting to see the world from the eyes of someone like BBP. Doing a complete turn from a marine, dignified, Garp's protege at some point to a Blackbeard pirate and how the world looks from their view.

I doubt mentoring a rookie with a wooden Stick amounts to him getting rid of all his rust. That's decades of dealing with peers which Ray wasted. He probably still got rid of some rust though, actively teaching Haki, sparring with Luffy and having an enhanced ambition to teach the next Generation.
