I don't want it to be that way, but that's literally how Oda writes Kid's character.
Because Law was more popular, Oda just decided to sell out on any plans he had on Kid and instead make him Law's sidekick. Like the Big Mom fight should have been Kid's fight. It was his first real spotlight in the new world, whereas Law got PH and Dressrosa. Law should have taken the backseat.
Instead Law got to do more damage, Oda gave him the flashier attacks, and Oda even made him look good in defeat by having him clash with Teach and show off DF negation haki.

Overall, Oda seems intent on using Kid as his personal punching bag and keeping him as a sidekick character, basically a slap in the face to any fan who was invested in Oda's initial portrayal of Kid.
