Is Shanks a deeply flawed and complex character?

So people have been coping and telling me that I’m just hating on Shanks because he punks admirals and that he’s not really a Gary Stue. He’s actually a really complex, tragic, hardworking, and well written character apparently.

The biggest indicator of a Gary Stue or Mary Sue (aside from never earning anything) is lacking character flaws.

I challenge all Shanks fans to give me three clearly defined character flaws. I’ll be shocked if I even see one that people agree on.

I mean for one, no matter how you "interpret" it, his meeting with the Gorosei has flawed intentions because we know "what" the Gorosei are.

- They commit Genocide
- They work at the whim of an unknown ruler
- They have slaves

No matter which pirate he's discussing, it doesnt nullify the fact that he's there talking to them. Everyone should agree on this point, no matter what.

Having CD lineage doesnt make a Gary Stu trait either, because theres nothing remotely positive about it. Rocinante absolutely hated his lineage.

Soooooo…. just talking to the gorosei in non-violent terms = a character flaw.

That’s uhhhhhhhh a little bit of a stretch.

Yes it is a character flaw, because evidently Shanks is comfortable enough to walk into Mariejois to do it.

Call it a "stretch" instead of what it is, an intended plot twist by the author (the scene was drawn as a double spread/shocking ending).

Glad you hate the character, dont know what else to tell you lol

Bro, negotiating with an evil entity doesn’t = evil.

There’s no way you actually think that. Unless it’s revealed that Shanks HIMSELF had malicious intent when speaking to them, there no character flaw.

Also to make this even more blunt, actions =/= character traits.

Since you’re upset because I said evil, then fine.

Negotiating with evil entities =/= a character flaw.
Im not upset about anything, you just keep goalposting your Gary Stu nonsense.

And yes, yes it does make it a character flaw, quite literally the definition:suresure:

"Talking" is an action taken by the character, doesnt matter if its violent or not. Clearly the conversation benefitted the Gorosei. Sorry.

He has no flaws, it’s why he’s inherently boring

You have to show that Shanks himself didn't have positive intent.

Think about it like this.

Say I negotiated with a Nazi SS officer to spare the lives of several Jewish children.

So do I now have a character flaw? Since I negotiated with someone evil?

Similarly with Shanks and the Gorosei, you have to show that Shanks did not have purely benevolent intent otherwise it's not a flaw.

I argue the opposite. YOU have to prove that its not a flaw first, because the authors intent of the scene is as a plot twist and that something is up with Shanks. Its done to make YOU question what Shanks is doing there. And you also can see he's talking about a pirate, not really doing something altruistic lol.

If I saw you talking to an SS officer, it doesnt matter the outcome until you tell me what you are doing. Until that point, you are flawed for talking to a Nazi.

Weird conversation lol

Among the admirals, only Fuji is respected...Shanks was like God from the beginning...When a 5-year-old child insults us, do we beat him?
Shanks entered the story with this ideology from the beginning...And a man who was like his father was executed before his eyes...And that was not the whole story. He faced the fact that he was born from an evil family...And he is not a person that Roger is waiting for
Now you want to say that I am a fan of Shanks because of his good looks?
And I advise you to read the first chapter again
There are a total of 5 or 6 real Shanks fans in this forum and it's a fact that we are waiting for the hate from all other fandoms....This is what happens when you become a Shanks fan:kayneshrug:
Why do you make a thread a thousand times?
Who says Shanks is perfect?
Shanks is an interesting cliché, but he hasn't yet become a super cliché like Zoro and Mihawk...Shanks was a self-sacrificing character from the beginning of the story, he maintained his complexity by the standards of the One Piece story..What do you expect him to become Aizen?
Or compete with Moriarty as a villain?
:kobeha:
