Oda didn't know what to do with King
He ended up making up some stupid ability to hype King
He wanted to make King seem special like Marco is due to his fruit or katakuri due to his haki and df


Lunarian flame ability is one of the worst ideas
It could have been better if the flame soaks damage then goes off if overused.

King didn't think his durability could handle zoro's attacks anymore so went for more speed and mobility. Zoro nor Luffy have used adhaki to attack the seraphim so we don't know if they'd make the same decision. What's the point in keeping up durability if it doesn't work.

King doesn't have a switch in his body to turn his flame on or off. "Flame-on/off modes" are an invention of you readers.
What the manga says, is that Zoro realized that when King moves fast enough, his flame turns off. When he slows down, it's back on again. King called it "the rules of his body", it's not something he can control, other than choosing to slow himself down. It's not because he is afraid, nor stupid.
The Seraphim are part King, the rules of their bodies regarding fire must be the same. If their fire is constantly on, it only means that they are not fast enough. If Zoro and Luffy want to beat them, first they have to make them move faster. That's all.

But Lunarian flames are much more tricker.

King was fighting for a much more longer period than Seraphim are right now. So their flames will eventually comes out after getting tired or something like that.
