Oda in a interview did say that he was aware that there would be a good chance that many might end up not liking the cartoonish style of Gear 5th.

However he still chose to go through with it and other than some people, I've seen plenty of others that ended up really liking Gear 5th.

Some people in the One Piece fandom still thinks that Oda will give Luffy some super edgy serious power up, Oda will never do that and it doesn't fit Luffy's character at all.

Even Gear 4th was still somewhat wacky.
