We don't really know if it's a small stab, but we do know wounds like this can sway things in someone's favour. If Katakuri's stab didn't drop luffy some tiers why did he feel like he needed to stab himself to 'even' the playing field? They're not exactly friends they're pirates. He didn't want to beat a Luffy that was weakened through outside interference. Kuzan over here happy to act tough after an Old man gets stabbed first.

In Kuzan's first arc he mentions Garp and Smoker in ways that imply a familiarity with the latter beyond him just being an annoying soldier; they share their final scene pre-timeskip together which retains their casual relationship, and then post timeskip in Kuzan's biggest moment pre-stealing Pudding he was reintroduced into the story to save Smoker's life in a way that paralleled Dragon's rescue of Luffy while also foreshadowing Smoker's future/commentating on his present frustration with his position in the world with dialogue that was a direct mirror to Law's dialogue when he beat Smoker earlier in the arc.

Koby has ties to Kuzan now but that doesn't supersede the previous 20 years of the story that you Koby demons want the throw out on a whim.

Edit: And learn to think like someone who took a tenth grade literature class actually could and connect the many parallels Smoker has to Garp that could be explored in relation to Kuzan beyond the more blatant points

It's quite similar to the Strawhats in some ways, they're not all powerhouses. I believe most of BB crew can use basic haki though unlike strawhats, we've seen Burgess use it and he's pretty trash.

They are similar but Different than the SH. Literally thats how most of them are. Shiryu is like Zoro but also dishonorable. Just like BB is like Luffy but also different. BB crew has been set up to be Luffy greatest Enemy. The reason Luffy doesn't have a comeback to modt of what BB says is because he agrees with it. BB methods is what separtes them

I was comparing Luffy to Garp actually. But that's besides the point, why is Oda drawing Garp receiving unfair damage before Kuzan does anything notable, why not before this incident takes place, to really lay down a marker? Flashback means nothing, in Marineford, Kuzan could have executed town sized haki punch but didn't? Sounds like retcon behaviour. Instead he was being kicked around by Marco.
