I just don't understand why there's so much cringe in the acting, directing, etc...

You could have improved this way more. It wouldn't be perfect, but it could be a long running series easily.

Any good series first and foremost needs an awesome MC. Luffy actor can't carry this show.

I think only OP fans or those in manga/anime feel cringe tbh.

If your expectation is " high budget fan film made as a tribute to Oda's work and a love letter to the hardcore One piece fandom" then you may be pleased. However if the expectation is " The new hot mainstream show that will have non anime and manga folks chomping at the bit for a second season" then you will be disappointed. Unfortunately the mission statement was the latter and they failed from the moment I saw Inaki's performance. But I'm sure the fans will find something to love about this passion project.
Did you watch the whole thing or is it just your first impressions?

Just finished it, and yeah it was bad. I am not feeling Inaki Godoy. He's not how I pictured Luffy like at all. That "OF COURSE I WILL!" yell after helping nami was just straight cringe, it might have worked in the anime, but it does not in live action. The CGI is some of the worst I think I've ever seen, you can immediately tell when a green screen is being used. Everything feels like it has less impact than the manga or anime. Axe hand was toned down, no Don Krieg fight, Garp hates the warlord system, why the hell would he send Mihawk to capture Luffy? Overall just meh, I'd give it a 6/10.

Binged all 8 episodes in one day, it was amazing. I would highly recommend this to all my friends and family who never heard of One Piece. I like that they show blood and dismemberment, even more graphic than the source material at times. The villains had excellent portrayal, Captain Kuro, Buggy, Arlong. Captain Kuro could not have been portrayed better, in particular, knocked it out of the park. I'm reading some of you saying the acting was sub par, really? Garp, Nami, Luffy, Kaya, Kuro, Zeff, Zoro to name but a few did really well and sold their characters. One Piece, the manga, is goofy as hell. One Piece Live Action is goofy too, so I was pleased with that. It had a feel good factor running throughout, and the humour is really good. I love that they used the F bomb, cracked me up.

*Spoilers*

Of course there are some gripes to be had, Gin is a fan favourite, he was a nobody here. No Hachi. Sanji is buffer than Zoro...awkward. Nami/Emily Rudd is so distracting and beautiful, can't keep my eyes off of her. Some unfortunate casting decisions for characters who will be really important later on. Ben Beckmann to name just one.

9/10 - very good start, can only get better if the fandom gets behind it, imagine Drum Kingdom and Alabasta.... I can't fkin wait!

I honestly think the different telling of familiar events is the best way to keep longtime fans entertained - it’s cool, at least to me, to know where we’re going but not how we get there. Beyond that, the chemistry between the Straw Hats feels good and fun…also, for those of you decrying the fanservice, what exactly should something like this provide for cynical fucks like us?? We’ve analyzed and debated this series to hell and back as long as we’ve been fans, so why not quiet down, sit back, and loosen up for a while?? :luuh:

This comment was made before the show dropped. But even after watching it I feel the same way. The problem is that they sold Oda this idea that they're trying to tap into a whole new audience, the same ones that will sit down to watch Breaking bad, Peaky blinders, Stranger things or early seasons TWD. Then every decision they made served as a counter to that mission statement. The guy down the street who doesn't give a rats about manga and anime isn't sitting through hours of a show lead by Inaki Godoy's Luffy. Think about how integral Andrew Lincoln was for the success of TWD, a show also based off a comic book-hell most of the season covers featured Andrew posing solo, because HE was the face of the franchise. Inaki is supposed to carry a series that is much grander in scope and he simply doesn't have the chops to do it. They failed at the first step. Which is why they should have just called it " A high budget fan film made for hardcore One Piece fans" and not " The next big thing that's going to draw in new audiences".

Remember that the sign of a successful live action adaption of anything is that the bulk of it's fans don't even know it's based off a comic book/manga or have never read it and they don't even feel the need to because the show transcends it's comic origin and succeeds as a SHOW. The amount of liberties they would have to take to make One Piece a legitimately good show is indescribable, I mean for gods sake the first and best seasons of TWD took a shit ton of liberties and that's a world that's far more grounded than One Piece. It's really a case of the people working on it not being talented enough to translate the work of a legitimately talented author. Tolkien's work had Peter Jackson behind it, early Walking dead had Frank Darabont and One Piece has who?. No real vision, that's the cold hard truth of the matter.

Overall I liked it. Some of the changes were great and helped the first half but I don't think worked for the second half. Baratie and Arlong Park did not have the same emotional weight for me as the manga did and I don't know if this is your first time experiencing One Piece if you get the same feeling.

Looks good and I think the actors were great while having room for improvement

It kinda looks like everyone in Reddit, rating sites and media journos are being paid by Netflix and co, everything in there just feel scripted. They're all posting the same thing.

Completely different than what it was 1+ weeks ago LOL

Sweet Jesus ….. man idk how to feel , I’ve just finished ep 6 so far theres been some Good maybe even great scenes but holy shit there’s ALOT OF CRINGE like to the point where I almost feel like fast forwarding. I think it may be the dialogue at times but I expected it…..And GET GARP OUT OF MY SIGHT……..Like it was cool initially to see more focus on him but man Garp is a little annoying. I like that they’re kind of making it their own thing and not going by the manga feels more natural that way. Strawhats are all Good imo Zoro, Nami & Sanji are the top 3 in the live action. Usopp is pretty good too. Luffy is hit or miss for me.Feelings on Luffys character change by the hour. Ep. 5 is the best episode so far….. let’s see if 7 and 8 are any good I hope they’re good.
