There is no rapper that comes within a one mile radius of Lupe. Lyricism wise. Maybe no other artist.

Never.

I was never a Nas fan. When I was a kid, I loved I know I can and hip hop is dead. I really listened a lot to him in highschool with the message being my favorite song of his and a reminder of how dope and raw his music is. Though he's barely in the same area code.

Nas, Black Thought, Andre 3K, Mos Def, Pusha T, J Cole, Logic, Kendrick Lamar, Ghostface, Jay -Z, Common, Talib Kweli, Jadakiss, Styles P, Eminem, Royce Da 5'9, (various dead MCs)

@Natalija @Jew D. Boy
My top 5 is Tupac, Kanye, Kendrick, Mos def and Lupe. Though as far as lyricism though they don't come close. Mos def himself said he wouldn't want a battle with Lupe.

royce went at it with Lupe
love this song but he not the one.

Em never came close to the quality of the songs like Mural, put you on game the cool etc.

Tupac was more poetic it was well know that biggie was the better lyricist, And I agree that poeticness is important to lyricism. Though listen to Paris, tokyo or prisoner 1 &2. and you see he just as poetic as tupac while being as contervirsal and meaningful.

Lilwayne and Andre are up there but really play any song by them or both of them at the same time and I'll play a Lupe song that makes them look like a third grader.

Logic not even close.
ghostface I'll be honest I don't listen to him enough to make an argument
common not even close. maybe if you said common sense it would be closer
talib... now that's a good one but I lupe is better than most def he's better than talib kwali
black though.. no play a song that's on Lupe's level I'll wait

Jadakis: I'm on top of my game yo the og daddy kush cocaine flow I'm about that cash not that tango dump a whole clip in your kangal. Claim to be a real you ain't though. ...but no.

Once a person has a subjective way of thinking, it's hard to shake it. So really no matter what I say, you'll stand on Lupe. Lyricism and Poetry are the same thing, however, they differ in their delivery. The same complex wordplay with simlies and metaphors in poetry, can also be found in hip hop. Remove the beats and the underlying theme is 100% poetry. With that said, dismissing Pac as a poet is not the business.

Lupe is in my top 10, but I can play several freestyles from Black Thought that's better than Lupe's collection. Not to mention his work with the Roots, or with Danger Mouse.

Lyric for lyric, bar for bar 3K runs circles around Lupe. Here's a sample

Common and Common Sense are the same people, he had to change his name due to a lawsuit. His lyrical prowess never changed

J Cole is a lyrical monster as well

Like I said, I roll with Lupe heavy, and I see your argument, but he isn't the greatest.

All I was saying is that Common was better back in the day when his name was Common sense. I don't think very high of Common. Also Im not biased. If somebody can give me a discography better lyrically than Lupe's I'll change my opinion but I've been listening to hip hop my whole life and never has somebody come close.

Nobody and i mean nobody has a better discography better than Kanye. He's widely recognized as the best artist of the century. He could have retired after college dropout, Late registration and Graduation and it would still be the case. That is cemented in my head. So I compare rappers to Kanye. To be considered better than Kanye you have to bring something of such a high level that it competes. For me Lupe's lyricism is so high that it is notable in the same arena. People will by analyzing his work for a century.

Mos def to me "thieves in the night" might be the most important song in hip hop. So his deepness reached that high of a level. If you talking about artist like Black thought and eminem etc. they use double and triple entendres, rhyme schemes etc.. While Bars hard hitting punchlines and double meanings that People like Lilwayne used is seen as one aspect of hip hop lyrics.

You can break it down into a lot of categories

wordplay - the ability to play with the meaning of words
Aggresiveness- self explanatory
realness -
bars- Impressive hard hitting lyrics that give people the stankface
Schemes- the way to sew together related ideas in a clever way
Flow - just the way voice deliver the lines
Rythmn -
storytelling- to tell a complete or partial complete story
double entendres
Triple entendres
Metaphores - Using unrelated words or concepts to describe a situation or event
poeticness
mysticism

The list would be much longer if I sat here and thought about it more.

Lupe has showed 10/10 in all categories to a level higher than anyone. His lyrics are just more complicated and involved than any other rapper. He might not have the best flow or bars out of everyone but he's high-level in every category.

You take every category and Lupe has made sure to put out the best work that category has seen. Not all categories I exaggerate but the categories that hip hop heads care most about for sure.

If you talk about storytelling he has, the cool, hip hop saved my life, little weapon

if you have poeticness and mysticism he has songs like Put you on game, mural, prisoner 1 and 2

Bars and realness look at daydreaming, conflict diamonds, Dumb it down

You talk about black truth... obviously he wants to tell "black" "truth" he doesn't even beat Lupe in that category.

Only other artist I can think of coming close is Kendrick maybe big L.

Kendrick put 3 back2back2back classic albums
So did kanye, so did Jay z, Wayne put out three of the most fire mixtapes. To make three classic albums is what I think it takes to be considered for goat. But I'm talking lyricism. Lype also put out 2 fire albums back to back so he's short of three but still impressive. Again I'm just talking about lyricism

I haven't heard many lupe songs besides a handful like Kick push a classic but not exactly lyrical genius

Imo top 3 most lyrical rappers of all time

1. Big pun
2. Marshal Matters
3. Prime Kanye
