Yonkos haven't meet for decades, but somehow their sons are rivals. Not only that, but somehow Yamato knows about Katakuri's defeat.

It doesn't mean their crew members haven't met as well, Yonko crew members usually have missions like Jack had the mission to find Raizo, Borges had the mission to get a DF for himself etc. Yonko crew members meet each other more often than you think and since both Yamato and Katakuri are sons of a Yonko I wouldn't be surprised if they have a history together.
