Personally don't think it'd be as complicated as a double agent. We already had Kanjuro.

It'd be more that he wants to fight Luffy himself, thats the only thing that I could see preventing him from being "good".

We saw a silhouette that had to be regular sized though. Oda seems to cheat but not that bad.

Im just Left Field Spittin, Yamato helps Luffy and then brings him into some sort of trap. Very unlikely but Oda has done what we have least expected so far from our mysterious characters, etc.

Sasaki was telling Kyoshiro that Yamato is lost but should still be on the island. The naunce of the sentence should be checked on the raw, but maybe he's tried to leave the island a lot of times, like Oden and is known for it.
