When Yamato says he was waiting for Luffy there should be a deeper meaning behind it.

Feels like he knows that Luffy and the Straw Hats are something special and he either wants to help them in liberating Wano or stop them from doing so.

My prediction is, he's probably been lurking around every corner of Wano and knows a lot about the backstory. Including the Kozuki Clan or Odens adventures with Roger. And maybe he knows about the 20 year prophecy. Unlike Kaido.

Another Left field theory... Yamato has a plan for Big Mom, IMO Kaido i think wants him to get married to BM and he is against it and using the SHs as an opportunity to take down his father and possible BM
