General & Others Is it just me or does Oda do flashbacks at the wrong time?

To be honest I don’t like when flashbacks take us away from the action. It doesn’t really build anticipation for me, I just start to get bored with the story. I honestly couldn’t care less about Kumas story or Bonny I’m more interested in Dragon who has been wasting panels for the entire flashback.

He could have just done this as Bonney was viewing the memories that would have been perfect timing. Does anyone else feel similar?

It's probably the only W I'm going to give you lol
Oda is an ass on this level

That's 2 times the man has done that during this arc and it's really annoying

The flashback had to come here because it comes after Kizaru failing his mission and Saturn coming to Egghead.

The flashback is necessary for Nika vs Saturn, it's the perfect moment to have it.

Don't blame Oda, blame yourself for being a Weekly Reader.
Naw I’m blaming Oda. He always does this type of stuff.

He does that on purpose, it feels wrong on us readers, we're in the middle of the action and he does that to create more hype and a huge cliffhanger. It feels wrong but it's actually right from his writer's perspective to be honest. Also when you get back into the action whatever happens will have more weight because you're aware of the background.

Another negative threads.. sigh.
Well, let's takle this one...

In One Piece flashbacks are the last links between the "action of rebellion" and the reason behind the "action of rebellion".

You need to understand that a flashback must be earned. The setup (at least in One Piece) must lead to a flashbacks. Only then the result between the reason and the rebellion will feel satisfying. This is why you can't give a flashback at the beginning of an arc. Same things, it must appear at the pivotal moment, that's why you can't see them after the conclusion of the conflict

Trust me, without the flashback, the second part of the action you will see would feel absolutely bland. The flashbacks are exactly where they should be.

What other thread was negative?

I just hate that the flashback have mire interesting elements than the story does. Shounen be like that. Oda introduced the buccaneer race and killed them off in the same arc/ flashback.

I think he does them late do keep the mistery as long as he can,and also for re-read value. Now we can re-read Egghead with a different view on all the Vegapunk,Bonney,Sentomaru and Kizaru interactions. And also Kizaru and Kuma interaction in Sabaody.
I understand that he does it to build tension. That’s why I said it doesn’t actually do that for me. I just lose interest in these moments. I think it would have made more sense to see the flashback as Bonney went through Kumas memories. That way we aren’t cutting away from the most exciting part of the arc. That’s just my opinion though it’s I was just curious what others thought.

In this one instance I agree I wish we got it when Bonney did but in general no. We got Doffy and Law's flashbacks during their fight. We got Noland when Luffy was fighting Enel and I didnt have an issue. I'm just really excited to see how this arc ends that Im getting antsy

My thought on the flashback: It is a little long, yes. But it serves 3 things:
1) It gives us the background info for the relationship between Kuma, Bonney and Saturn/WG and this is nice
2) In it Kuma serves as a prime example for every slave the WG has ever enslaved. He is the personification of the opression humanity needed tu endure under the WG. It therefore shows us that the WG indeed needs to be eradicated.
3) It gives us the preparing background information for another flashback - Vegapunk's. Vegapunk has had no flashback as of now. And there are still many questions we need the answer to. Therefore we are still not at the pinnacle of Egghead - even after Kuma has arrived ans is saving Bonney.

I do like the information we get from the current flashback. And it is good to know how everything fits together like a puzzle - I like that quite a lot. 😊

Not really, it’s pretty basic story telling to have the rising action to a plot right before the climax. So having the flashback right before kuma arrives and has his big moment is pretty fitting.

We need to establish Kuma and Saturns relationship prior to their reunion. Don’t know any other time to possibly have it.
