Nika is the first Sun God.
JoyBoy is the one who awakened Nika's fruit first.
Luffy is the one who inherited JoyBoy's will and awakened Nika's fruit.
Luffy is the grand sum of both Nika and JB, at once surpassing both. Luffy was not erased from the manga. His character is being written in a worse way than before, I'd grant you that, but it won't be neither JB nor Nika the one who finds the OP, topples the WG, and liberates the world from the cosmic evil that is BB -- it'll be Luffy, and him alone.

I'd love it if Nika or his will were revealed to be a negative influence
or if Luffy's ultimate struggle is against Fate itself, so he can be fully free
but as it stands, I don't think Luffy went away.
He may act retarded while in G5, but it's still Luffy. He wasn't taken over.
This alone (Nika's will taking over the DF user's body) would go against the very essence of the fruit: which is freedom.

So luffy effectively is just someone else shadow and clone
