Trust me on that, the left didn't moved. In fact for the left, its worse, it was weakenned. There were current of thought 20 or 30 years ago in the left all over the world that do not exist anymore outside of micro party.
In reality, its the far right who increased. What this created is what we call the displacement of the overton windows. The far right increased its power SO MUCH that it radicalized the society toward conservatives and reactionnaries ideas.
The election of Trump and the quasi election of Lepen in France are testimonies of that situation. 20 years ago, those ideologies would have been considered not republican and dangerous. But now ? Not anymore.
The overton window shifted completely toward the right. So much that now, what were simple leftist 20 years ago are now considered far leftist by the overall population.
My case is a simple exemple. When I entered this thread, I was not even that radical. I was what you could call a simple social democrat without even strong anticapitalist idea. And yet, I was constantly called a far leftist.
Same as political movements in France, the very few real leftist are called "far leftist" and diabolized by the media nowadays.
What was considered normal (the diabolization of reactionnary ideas and common leftist) has left its place to a new normal (the diabolization of leftism and the acceptation of reactionnary ideas) and it happened in the US too. Let me ask you : do you see any real leftist candidate for the white house ? Or are they all invisibilized by liberals ?
The battle I am going through against transphobic people here is a perfect testimony of this situation.
So no. You didn't became a conservative because leftist, you became one because the far right's influence transformed everyone into a conservatist.
I've explained that multiple time already, The difference between leftism and rightism can be found on two parameters:
- The opposition between materialism and idealism
- The vision on how to deal with capitalism
> Leftists are materialist and rightist are idealists.
> Leftists want to regulate radicaly or overthrow capitalism and rightists want to strenghten or deregulate it.
Simple
I remember doing the same thing. This got me toward conspiracy theories and far rightist ideas. I see that you choosed a similar path
