Had to make King superior to kaido in the stat kaido was hyped for in his intro all 2 acts luffy needs training just because of this.

It does look like a retcon, just not because he wasn't supposed to be Zoro opponent, but rather maybe Oda realized after Zoro's rooftop feats that this fight needs more tension.

Given how the 2 other first mates have an invincible gimmick, I have a hard time believing King never had the invincible gimmick to separate him from the rest of the pack, it was always going to be there, but Oda was just hashing things out clearly. He probably originally had it as extreme durability or recovery, and just changed it to invulnerability altogether as it was more unique.

I don't not agree with you when or why that retcon happened my dude and there is no argument you put out, not even circumstantial evidence. The fact that macro declared he was not fighting king the chapter zoro damaged him, and the fact oda had king already the lunarian flame, which looks like the mother flame and also was the race to built the next, and arguably further arcs, threat, clearly already indicates that oda had the defense gimmick always in mind.

This is specifically a team that colors it off Oda’s official coloring and then taking cues from the anime (according to the wiki on the topic).

I don’t think Oda is involved in this much at all. It doesn’t even sound like they ask him about coloration that doesn’t exist in the manga. They go right to the anime.
