Yeah. I've stopped watching this man years ago.
He is basically explaining how.. he defended religion for a long time before starting to attack it ferociously back.
I took a different path, I started first to hate religion. I had the same belief that religion was the problem and through the questionning of religion would come better behaviors.
Sadly, this is a naive point of view and a very individualistic one. It's a point of view that doesn't take into account the material reality of the world and the fact that, yes.. even if you don't really like that, some people with ideas that are not progressive are INDEED being oppressed in the world right now and this is not ok.
On this basis, we must defend them.
The problem here (I remember seeing this video a long time ago) is that he confuses religion with religious. He creates a systemic problem out of negative behaviors.
The religion is not the problem, the people are not the problem, the SYSTEM is. The entire system that pushes people to look at the most problematic aspect of a text to justify their ideologies. The system that pushes men to enforces patriarcal morals. Or pushes people to reject others based on what they call their "religion".
The reality is : The text and the people are just an excuse, the real problem goes FAR beyond religion. To the core of society itself:
- Patriarchy
- Capitalism
- Heteronormativity
- Systemic racism
Etc.
Those systemic problems are the reason why you can see people look at text to find answer and sometimes be oppressive themselve because of that.
Blaming religion, why not, but transforming it into an obsessive fight is simply blinding ourselve to the reality of the REAL oppressions in the world today and the REAL causes behind those problems.
