Anime Discussion How did you get into anime?

As the title says.

How did you start getting into anime?

At what point did you start watching anime more regularly?

When I was a child I watched in public TV shows like DB, Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, Yugioh and Pokémon, and some other magical girl show. Didn't know what anime was at the time.

Then I stopped watching animated shows for a good while.

When I reached Uni, around 2010, a colleague showed me a clip of Sasuke vs Itachi and I got really interested in it so I started watching Naruto. Saw a few more shows in the meawhile then didn't watch anime anymore. Watched a few more in 2015 and 2018 like OP, HxH, FMAB, Cod Geass, Death Note, Akame ga Kill, Angel Beats, Highschool DxD, Overlord etc but it was short lived. Only when Covid came and I stayed long periods at home did I start watching more anime. And that's when I slowly shifted my preferences more towards romance instead of battle shounen.

Well i was first introduced to anime like most Americans my age, through the mainstream series that came on Toonami shows such as Dragon Ball, Zatch Bell, Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho and of course One piece however I wouldn't truly dive into the endless depths that is anime until I was about 12 years old when I watched heavens lost property (back when it was on netflix) One thing lead to another next thing I know 16 years passed and here I am still watching like 7 anime series at a time and writing this comment

I was always in to nerdy stuff I got a super Nintendo before I was even 4 thanks to one of my cousins

I watched my first anime ninja robots during 1995 on cartoon network I was just 5 and didn't know it was anime as time went by I watched more and more without knowing they are anime

in 2004 while watching pokemon and one piece I finally realized what anime means and that's about it I guess

back in the 90s power zone used to be the cool kid's thing on cartoon network

in the 2000s they introduced toonami after stopping power zone

You were there when SNES and Mega Drive were still relevant?

My first console was the Gamecube. Can't imagine how it was like when 2D classics such as Yoshi's Island and Chrono Trigger were considered revolutionary in those times.

I really enjoyed super mario too. That one was my favourite along with Sonic the Hedgehog.

Yeah back then I played a lot more than now. Though I remember better the games I played after, in Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and N64. Funnily enough I never played Chrono Trigger and only found out years later about it. Even now if I play a game I like it more with the graphics from that era than the ones from today.

Gamecube was great too. Remember playing Super Smash Bros Melee and Sonic Adventure 2 on it.

The Sailor Moon Wave

I was only watching Micky Mouse, Looney Tunes, Winnie the Pooh and stuff until I was like 7 or 8 or so. Then Sailor Moon started airing in germany alongside other classics. That's probably when I started. Shortly, before the 2000s.

Was aware of anime through web surfing, watching a few on and off on TV as a kid (mainly Doraemon) and having friends who watched it.

But I only got really into them seriously via JoJo, which I found through TF2 SFM videos like ceno0's Attack on Heavy.

Also DBZA got me into Drahon Ball, and that led me to rediscovering some older ones I'd seen as a kid...and ofc YT recommendations led to a lot of discoveries too.

I installed an MHA game a while back because I thought it might be interesting, and I decided to watch the show after a few days of playing the game. After realizing that I liked anime I started watching it more often and got into more shows/manga.

My friend gifted me her Sailor Moon dvd when I was around 10 y.o. so I watched it and liked it. The next year she showed me Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, I again really liked it. She also showed me some Miyazaki movies.

One girl from school showed me 1st opening of Black Butler and I got interested and watched the show. At 13-14 I started watching Fairy Tail cause my friends from school talked about it a lot.

After losing interest in FT I found out about Soul Eater and Pandora Hearts. And I REALLY liked Pandora Hearts. I hyperfixated on that shit. And realized that I prefer reading manga to watching anime.

The rest is history.

One of my friends were an ex anime fan, said it was weird but i wanted to try it so he helped me find one, warned me that one piece was too long, started watching it. And manga was literally 2 weeks ago cause I was in detention at school (read about 50 chapters)

Well, my older brother and cousins watched Anime and collected Manga and Comic Books, so I did too (I dropped American comics a long time ago though, I prefer Manga now) I've always loved animated shows and cartoons and still do tbh. It wasn't odd for me and felt natural to pick up Anime. I think Naruto was the series that first got me really hooked, then came Bleach and One Piece- the big three. It's entertainment and better than most film and shows that come out nowadays.

I actually do not remember what the first anime I watched was. I do remember watching Voltron: Defender of the Universe and Gatchaman in the '80s. I watched Sailor Moon in the mornings before school in the '90s, I never really liked the original Dragon Ball but got into Dragon Ball Z in the late '90s when I was in Junior High School. One of my fondest anime memories was watching Akira on sci-fi one weekend when I was in Junior High school, since then it has been one of my favorite movies. I started collecting DBZ on VHS cassette tapes until I graduated high school. In the early 2000s, I got heavy into Yu-Gi-Oh and started playing the DS games and watching every Saturday morning. I stopped watching anime for some time after 2004 until like 2007 when I came across episode 30 something of Death Note on Cartoon Network and a show called Tokko on Sci-fi that pulled me back into anime. From there I started an anime DVD collection.
My first purchases were: Death Note, FMA, Baccano!, Elfen Lied, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Code Geass, D. Gray-man, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Bleach. Since then I have nearly 500 anime completed on my MAL with many others on-hold, dropped, or currently watching.
