Character design is king for popularity. To make a comparison between two similar and recent games, character design is a big reason why Concord collapsed while Marvel Rivals soared (that and gameplay).

If most people wanted to stare at aesthetic mediocrity, they would take a walk down a public street or look in the mirror for an hour. :pepecafe:

I'm not saying that there isn't more but character design is the first step to securing a character's popularity. If the character falls flat at the first step, chances are that they aren't getting back up.

Look at how hard the popularity of the Pre-TS Supernovas was carried by their designs alone. People were excited for them cause they looked cool and had awesome powers.

Look at the most recent popularity polls for the Top 20 One Piece characters and you will be seriously challenged to find a single, genuinely aesthetically displeasing character design.

Design is the immediate advertisement of a character to the audience, it is the promotion of physical personality and Coby's design screams "this sassenach is bland". If the author doesn't care enough about him to invest in him a decent design then I'm certainly not going to invest expectations into that sucker.

His character is bland, his personality is bland and worst of all, his design is bland.

Disliking Coby cause he has no fun and interesting powers or design is completely legitimate. Aesthetics sell. Lol.

Not every character has to be super colorful and powerful and all that. They don't need to have a grand design either.
Koby is good because he's "just a normal guy", he has no special race, no devil fruit, no germa enhancements, no special swords, nothing but Haki, Rokushiki and raw physicals. And yet he's rising through the ranks with just that.
It's nice to see a guy evolve from mopping floors on Alvida's ship to training with Garp and busting mountain sized arms with one punch without using any type of cheat code to do so.
Koby admittedly still isn't that great a character, he doesn't have a very good story or anything, but for what he's supposed to be, he's pretty great.
Not on the level of characters like Kuzan, Blackbeard, Law, etc. in terms of writing, but still solid.

Koby’s not a bad character
He reminds me of Tanjiro or Deku, he’d probably be a better MC than post-g5 Goofy tbh. But yeah I don’t like his design, it’s a big reason.
