two options about the identity of the Imu:
First: Imu is a ancient god creature who lives 1600+ years. Being a god, not a fruit, he can share his power and immortality with others as he does with gorosei. He defeat sun god, but people still believed in the sun god, so Nika fruit appeared, Imu was badly beaten and lost for a while.
Second:
Imu it is under the control of fruit, and it does not control itself. He was a young noble from Neron family. He was in love with Lily. But by deception / or thirst for power, he ate the fruit of Satan, lost control and continued what he could not achieve during the 1st war.
As we know, when a user awakening , they may lose their identity. Which is exactly what happened to Imu, which explains why he speaks of himself in the third person.
If Luffy had lost his identity upon awakening, perhaps he would have remembered all the events from the 1st war.
