It’s more probable that Gaban felt the arrival of the Holy Knights and stopped the fight as it was more pressing.

I am saying they gave him the fighting flashbacks b/w Roger/Rayleigh and Gaban, and it was obviously a joke. And yes, he more than likely gave up due to the arrival of HKs or he simply doesn't want to fight with Zoro and Luffy at the same time.
