The 5 silhouette that was showed are characters that Kaido rate at very least on par with him or even above him, not just on par with him.
And he was wondering if Luffy could reach that level too.
Kaido is absurdly strong, but deep down he knows that he was about to be beaten fair and square, at least once. We can clearly see it from his reaction even after 20 years has already passed.
