So why is it that Law fans argue that he's the Whitebeard equivalent of this generation? Where is this comparison coming from?

From Law being objectively the far more important, present, plot connected and strong pirate/friendly rival that Luffy has had.

Not that one has to agree.

Oda tried to rivalry gimmick between Luffy Law and Kid post-Wano and nobody took it seriously. In the arc where luffy became an ancient deity messiah with 3 advanced forms of haki, Law & Kid's biggest achievement was pushing BM down a hole. Now they don't even have pirate ships.

The only "rival" pirates that can get in Luffy's way are the other emperors
