Back in June 2014, the writer of Re:Zero said that Regulus is the 3rd strongest character in the series.
Reinhard and Ram are above him in as the first and second strongest characters in the series.
He also said that if all the Sin Archbishops and all the Witch of Sins with the exception of Satella were to fight against each other, Regulus would be the sole survivor. .
So yeah, he is still easily one of the most strongest characters in the series, but as a actual fighter he sucks lol.
If it wasn't for Reinhard, they wouldn't have been able to fight back against Regulus, replace Reinhard with anyone else and they would easily lose the fight.

Regulus's death in the LN was way more brutal than the anime shows just like with the Subaru rabbits scene.

In the LN, Reinhard kicks Regulus down into the ground of the Earth and Regulus is forced to use his abilities to stop himself from falling down further which turns him into a mash of meat. His spine was snapped in half and his lower body was covered in his own piss and shit which is absolutely disgusting. The anime only shows Regulus's spine breaks in half and his body wasn't turned into mashed pile of meat.
The anime also cuts down A LOT of Regulus's monologue when he got sent flying in the sky. Most of it wasn't really important except his backstory, Regulus was a problem child but he didn't have a bad family or anything like that. Then when he got his Authority of Greed, he kills his own family and even destroys an entire country. His first wife was his childhood friend iirc. He kills her family too. Then his first wife committed suicide and smiled on her last breath, hence why Regulus hates putting smiles on his wives' faces. But his first wife was special that Regulus actually built a grave for her. That was Regulus's first and last humane thing he ever did. Yeah that's about it that they changed.
