The thing is assuming it's 1000 people with each being a healthy adult of say 75 kg, that's a total of 75000 kg or 75 tons.

An average african elephant usually gets upto 5.5 tons.

So if they're all bloodlusted the humans could just link up and suffocate the larger animal to death by clambering over it en masse.

I really think 300 or even 500 people would be better odds.
