The guy that was feared due to his intimidating aura. The guy who beat a logia without touching them (also only seconded by a guy using powerful CoC). Zoro adjusted quickly to it due to his affinity. Just like luffy was able to adjust to using adv CoC mid battle against kaido.
I don't think it's retcon. It's just further power up. Same as kaioken, SS, SS2 and SS3 or fusion for saiyans.

If it's a further powerup, Zoro is willy nilly using SSJ2 without knowing he can even go SSJ1.

On a random note I really miss zoans having many forms and some actual creativity to them. They're just mostly stat boosts and furry transformations with a touch of Paramecia for Mythical Zoans.
