That is an oxymoron because Zoro cannot know when he is using CoC when he cannot even differentiate between CoA and CoC. So it's completely by coincidence, like russian roulette. Either he's using CoA in one moment or CoC.

Zoro was controlling ACoC. He just didn't know he was controlling.

Here, he first release overwhelming CoA haki. Then he added ACoC haki. That shows he has control over it.

That was because king never fought before fighting Zoro. He really just had no showings at all which is why he was called King the Background. Not really comparable to Shiryu who has been seen fighting but got blown away by old Sengoku and buried by a hakiless throw from old Garp.
