Death Note clears 99.99% of manga. So glad recency bias didn't get characters like Frieren over Light.

Faith in humanity restored. W forum.

To be fair, Light almost didn't reach the semi-finals due to being tied with Spike Spiegel at 4th place. It was a coin toss and Light won. He was almost knocked out two rounds ago.

I can't really judge Death Note or the characters because I never saw the series, I do plan on seeing it around October of this year.

Some will bring up recency bias which imo is kind dumb because there is also nostalgia bias as well, there is always bound to be bias no matter what.

The fact that Frieren still made it to the semifinals, I still think was kind of impressive.

Also have you actually seen Death Note?

yes, I watched it 4 or 5 times, it is great

as for why I watched it that many times, I always ended up recommending it to friends and then watched it with them together lol. but that was like 10-15 years ago or so probably

My boy L losing so badly here ;-;

L >>> Light any day
L is amazing, but Light is just better.

Light's better than L in L's strong suits, while L can't come close to Light's stronger suits.

Light's smarter, has at the very least an equal deductive reasoning as L, and on top of that is much better with people, manipulating them, emotional intelligence, etc.

Light is just that guy.

Light is just that guy.
Light’s not smarter, he had an advantage of knowing the mechanics to a supernatural ability. L could have made it way simpler too if he also lacked the morals or was willing to win at all costs. Just kill Light and prove it after the fact, Near also mentioned this later but it wouldn’t be a β€œjust/satisfying win” or something like that.

Light is smarter than L, which is made clear in the story and the authors also gave Light a higher score for intelligence. L had all the world's disposal at his feet and still failed to capture Light, with all the police, tracking, FBI, infinite amount of money and manpower. Light outwits L throughout the story, and even has Rem note that he's transcended even the Shinigami. L is smart, no doubt, but Light is just smarter than him. Throughout the course of the story L constantly tries to bait Light into falling into traps, and observing even the minuscule reactions from him, and yet Light never falls for them. To constantly outwit a smart person such as L, without showing any signs of a change in behaviour, nerves, etc, Light has to be the smarter one.

yep this^

L also figured out that Light is Kira out of billions of ppl in the world lol
Its hella insane if u really think abt it

Light is smart too but he wasn't bound by morals or the laws in the same way L was which ultimately gave him an advantage

L always knew it was Light from the very beginning, he was just restricted by his morals. Yes, he had a resource advantage but Light was saved by luck multiple times as well… sometimes it even feels like cop outs β€” such as Rem being in love with Misa instead of her being the usual bystander god. Couple that with the fact that Light had access to the most convenient killing tool and knowledge of invisible gods that helped him a couple of times. Literally, the stars kept aligning for Light.

L also would have won once he was finally made aware of the Death Note, he was gonna win in no time. Light’s super smart no doubt, but he never really proved that he was superior in the cat and mouse game. L just lacked the real crucial information, literally lacking info on supernatural shit.

L wanted it to be Light, because otherwise it wouldn't be nearly as engaging and fun. The only time L tricked Light and got the best of him was with the Lind bit, and that was the only W L had against Light. And even that came in a moment where Light was inexperienced and high off of power. With Light locked in, L could never get the best of him.

Yes, he had a resource advantage but Light was saved by luck multiple times as well
What were those instances where luck saved Light?

Also I feel like you're trying to downplay the advantage L had. Imagine having access to every police database, setting up cameras, infinite money and foot soldiers, FBI, technology, the ability to raise a skyscraper in like over night just as HQ, L basically had quasi-omnipotent power and resources to prove that Light was Kira and he could never.

Like I said, L wanted Light to be Kira and operated on that thought process, even tho there was no actual sound reasoning behind it. So then L started going for different tactics to bait Light into revealing himself, but Light managed to outwit him still.

Let's also not forget that while yes Raito had the Death Note, he was playing the game on hard more, because he wanted to live longer. There were restrictions upon Light, cuz if Light hadn't had those restrictions, he could have killed L after their first meeting easily.

such as Rem being in love with Misa instead of her being the usual bystander god.
Well that's not Light's fault tho. Rem was attracted to Misa and Light managed to remove his 2 biggest obstacles in one fell swoop. He managed to outwit the world's greatest detective and a Shinigami at the same time. Do you realize how insane that actually is. How far ahead and calculating Light is.

Also Misa brought Light more unwanted trouble than actually doing anything good for him.

Couple that with the fact that Light had access to the most convenient killing tool and knowledge of invisible gods that helped him a couple of times. Literally, the stars kept aligning for Light.
Well yeah but the Death Note is not invisible and has a set of rules. It's not something Light can do without anyone actually seeing him do it. That's again another way that Light outsmarted L, when eating potato chips, writing with his weaker hand, and killing people while L was watching him and L being unable to see anything off or catch Light in any way.

L also would have won once he was finally made aware of the Death Note, he was gonna win in no time.
That's also not true.

When the knowledge was close to being revealed, Light went and made himself innocent.

By erasing everything he has done, and forgetting about it. So, he plans a few kills weeks before he erases his memories, tells himself that he will be locked up so that deaths will still occur while he is locked up (showing that he is not Kira), understands that L is really good at reading other people's intentions and therefore would be fooled by the oblivious Light, instructs the Shinigami to give the book to a greedy, power hungry individual, predicts that Light himself will be freed of prison due to the lack of proof by L, which therefore leads to himself assisting L in finding β€˜Kira’, leading to the arrest of Higuchi, which means that the Death Note would be taken from him and therefore end up in L’s hand, which would therefore end up in Light’s hand, which then leads to him recovering the memories at the exact moment when Higuchi is being imprisoned, which leads to him predicting that he would utilize the same watch which would contain a piece of the death note that would allow him to kill Higuchi.

Not only does he manage to predict how L and everyone else will react, he reads HIMSELF into the future, 100 steps ahead. There has not been any instance that L has contrived as meticulously as Light has.

When they do catch Light, Near notes that it was due to the fact that him and Mello together are enough to surpass L. But even then, they weren't actually enough to catch Light.
He predicted accurately what Near would do, exactly. Light, before Near himself thought about it, predicted that the latter would end up deducing that Mikami would be the best fit to fulfill Kira’s wishes. Thus, realizing that Near was going to change the papers of the Death Note for fake ones, told him to create a fake death note and start annotating on it. All while pretending to not have realized that Light was aware of Near’s actions.

Had Mikami not acted on his own and killed the woman (which Light told him over and over not to do), the SPK would have not realized that Light had created a fake death note and that would result in all members of the SPK and everyone else opposing Kira getting assassinated.

There are many smart characters in Death Note, but it's made clear that Light stands atop of all of them in terms on intelligence.
