Would explain a lot: Shanks got careless because of Regen, but Teach is an archeologist who spent years studying God Valley, and knows how to damage the God's Knights.
It's like Zoro scarring Kaido: Kaido had no idea Zoro had CoC, so, new scar.
It would be interesting if Shanks was sent as a God's Knight to deal with Teach, rather than encountering him as a Pirate
Shanks, Roger's son, working for the WG would disgust Teach, explaining the scar.
If Teach loves Xebec as a father, which it's starting to look like (also great Ace parallel since Ace hated Roger), then Shanks working for the WG who killed his father, Roger, would set Teach off.
