It feels like the whole point is that he was really just a guy with a jolly crew

A bit brutal (as most pirates would be) and definitely more interested in romance than Luffy but he was still just a guy

I always find it interesting when authors deconstruct their legendary characters in fiction. It's usually the same in real life as well

These figures that are touted as legends typically had more flaws than most people knew

Why though. Garp going toe to toe with Roger was always common knowledge. Garp is the father of Dragon and grandfather of Luffy after all, one being the protagonist and most significant figure and the other one being close as the Revo leader. Plus, they were both young, so Roger's growth rate may or may not had been slightly better, similar to Luffy outgrowing Smoker (an extreme analogy, because prime Garp in fact was close to Roger).

Remember, old Garp was walking through Aokiji's fruit related powers and smacking him around, until Aokiji started to go into CqC against said old Garp after having his abdomen stabbed. Same old Garp said he is going to kill Sakazuki.

If we wanna compare feats, Sakazuki:
- Was stalled by Vista and Marco for a prolonged time while being bloodlusted
- Couldn't stop a heavily wounded/damaged and brain dead Kuma while spamming his attacks, unable to properly aim for Kuma's face

All trolling aside, great pirate > admiral.

The Narrator during Kaido intro sounded like all his defeat were some kind of multiple ppl vs him solo hence specifically say "IF" it's one on one.
His childhood been a one man army till he's defeat on Luffy hands....he's build to be a raid boss

Roger is fighting people like garp and WB while mohawk cant even get past vista what are you smoking

I will say however, there is legitimately a decent chance “haki wizardry” is real and Roger(and probably Shanks) do have some power beyond mere swordsmanship.

I only say this because both Whitebeard and now Xebec seem to have had legendary busted DFs on top of their already top tier advanced haki and combat skills.

If Roger was even comparable to WB, then he must have had something to rival the gura. And coating his blade in haki wasn’t it, because WB could do that too.

It is very odd how a storm supposedly destroyed Shiki’s crew while saving Roger.

That said. This is all speculation and from everything we have seen thus far, Mihawk has better swordsmanship than Shanks and probably Roger too.
