I think I saw on Twitter that Oda didn't plan to have the Merry destroyed but the ships were getting too strong in the story compared to it.
Especially with Law against Blackbeard, we saw the ships of Kidd and Law be ridiculed in battle and that's probably a cue for an upgrade. I'm guessing a giant submarine with torpedos and shit for Law and a mechanical boat for Kidd. And probably another crewmate because they both need a third really strong fighter.
Even filler can't save you Jean Bart...

But is the lack of combat really the issue?
This just goes back to what I was talking about with @kekaro, people are just losing interest. Whether it's because of story reasons or a complete disinterest in Elbaf and its characters, the site has seen better days lol. I literally see the same 30 people in spoiler threads every week.
