No it’s not nostalgia, at least not for me
I reread the pre ts arcs because I wanted to know if nostalgia blinded me
Pre ts OP is sooooo much better, I enjoyed it a lot
The SHC members have a better dynamic, are better characters, each of them has importance and they feel alive
The comedy is peak
The art is way cleaner and the panelling too
The side characters are actually important
and there’s a feeling of adventure
Yep, for me its definitely more sunk cost and and just being engaged with the series for basically 20 years at this point.
There is definitely good shit (Kuma's backstory, bigger plot revelations that move the story forward in scary ways like the Mother Flame or Harley Text, character designs in general) but its mixed in with things that to me arent nearly as engaging anymore and its half the reason I am not participating in discussions on a weekly basis here lol.
Like take fights. Even if Oda wasnt best in class with them, as a younger artist he clearly was more interested in them then now. This was pretty standard expectations for him through Dressrosa. Then largely only Luffy gets fights through the next 100 chapters. Then Wano lasts 150 chapters but the actual fight payoff for some characters was personally not well developed or too short. Though 50 chapters fighting Kaido was alright, him and BM go down without using Awakening at all was absolutely ridiculous and almost contradictory. He hasnt even answered questions from the fanbase on this.
Egghead was the world offender. Lets hype 9 Vice Admirals and Kizaru with Saturn, only to not even use half of them and not give Kizaru/Saturn a focused fight. Kizaru literally does nothing new. Yes, we know Kizaru was canonically helping Luffy and we know Luffy couldnt defeat Saturn since he was immortal, but the entire escape sequence is just impact after impact and nothing directly engaging that resembles a fight.
Elbaf now worries me because while its characters, setting and this Flashback are great, there are only 3 actual villains here and one of them (Imu) definitely wont lose in a tangible way. So in a way we are kind of repeating what happened in WCI and Egghead. Now if Imu summons Shamrock and all of the HKs back here then thats a different story, but Im not expecting that at all now.
