Rayleigh vs Garling makes more sense currently. Whitebeard is pretty much an afterthought in this flashback,while Rayleigh and Shakky have been built up the time.

You could also force something like Shanks´s father vs father figure, idk. There´s something there probably. Whitebeard doesn´t even have the scar in the Oden flashback anyway

We know Rayleigh saves Shakky (or at least they are together in the present)
But we also know Garling was called "the champion of GV" and Celestial Dragon cheers for him in the present. That wouldn't make sense If he loses to Rayleigh, also his agenda will be finished if this is the first time we see him fighting and lose.

Garling didn´t rape Shanks´s mom, he probably just tricked her by pretending to be a normal guy. He´s educated and probably understands common world culture as opposed to some other CD´s. His wife or Xebecs wife won´t be evil either, they´ll just be pretty ignorant, like Sanji´s mom was somehow ignorant that Judge was evil.

Ironically, maybe the most sexist thing in the manga is that Oda doesn´t let women be evil much, like how he will probably redeem Gunko later on in this arc, and he´s done the same in the past. I think Imu is female still though, so that´s something.

Not really, Rayleigh is retired and not really going to achieve much in the story at this point. Garling just got his promotion and has greater opportunities from here on. Garling looks somewhat younger then current Shanks/Shamrock and has a baby face, while this is pretty much the prime of the dark king, and Oda needs to somehow justify his legend that makes everyone shit their pants whenever he enters a room, and fighting Marco for 3 days isn´t it.

No contradiction here, Garling genuinely killed the most people on GV, Rayleigh still saved Shakky from him. I highly doubt the CD´s would still be mad about him not getting Shakky 39 years later

Its true when a main character is involved. Oda never shows fights in detail in any of the flashbacks. At best you will get couple pages of cool shots and that's it. Don't expect pages and pages on Rocks vs Rogers and Garp.

Oh I agree full with you. My bad, I wasn't trying to say that Rayleigh needed the victory (you are right, Garling need it much more). What I mean was that Rayleigh probably got the victory cuz he ended up with Shakky, so if a confrontation between Garling and Rayleigh happened, that would mean Garling took the L and Rayleigh achieved his goal.

But that would hurt Garling agenda if that was his only interaction with a top tier in GV.

I think he might have scared Wb based on that old convo with Shanks but he didn't win the fight and it was interrupted.
