Yep, Roger is one of the most pivotal characters, alongside Luffy and Shanks, for the entire manga’s theme. Without Roger, there is no One Piece.

He's essentially relegated to a secondary character in the story. Barely any significance in flashbacks.

True it's truly feeling that way. After he ganged up on Xebec and took him out he was basically left with the only stable mature crew. The rest of the big dogs had to start from scratch and build up their empires and crews. It's honestly not surprising that he became the PK. He was the only one who could do it.

Basically Xebec was going to become the PK but he got taken out so the next best person took advantage and ascended.

We see this kind of stuff in Greek mythology with children ganging up (Cronus to Uranus and later Zeus to Cronus) and killing a parent and then the strongest of the child ascending and becoming the main god. The ascending child though is usually clearly weaker than the former god they slew (in a gang bang).

The speech he gave at the end of his life inspired many. But it also made him a larger than life figure. Once you sail and start looking for the one piece you start to discover the guy was scum the worst of the worst.

Roger achieved everything and was crowned the pirate king by the regular citizens of the One Piece world whereas Xebec was struck down in his prime and had his name erased from history by WG despite accomplishing just as many crazy feats as Roger.

Roger's biggest contribution is him starting new age of pirates. We have yet to see Roger's journey from his POV.

That being said I do agree rocks looks better for now. Strongest crew , more badass , more important lineage etc.

Those however are just tools. What exactly did Rocks do with these tools? Nothing of lasting importance, as far as can be seen so far.

He don't need Laughtale to know about world history, he knows about Ancient weapon, knows about the DF required to take down WG.

It's hard to believe that Oda actually wants to make a pirate that is greater than Roger, in name, fame, notoriety, power etc who's also around the same era. Tho Roger has his final chance to clear the fraud allegations in God Valley.
