It was suppose to be expected that main characters, protagonists, good guys should be better than side characters, villains, bad guys.

Yet what we are seeing lately is Oda doing the exactly opposite.

Roger, Harald, Garp are supposed to be the good guys. Good pirate. Good King. Good Marine. Yet what we saw is Rocks being the real start here. The bad pirate, disgusting, ruthless. Is actually the one who cares about his family, stands his ground, and actually has a purpose in his life.

Does Oda do that on purpose? To make Xebec character way better than all those others? He failed on purpose with Roger, Garp and Harald? And Luffy?

  • Garp Roger Harald
    • All of them prioritised their family.
    • Garp character is most complex with Ace. It's very well written.
    • Roger loved his crew, didn't survive to see his off spring.
This is all just a recency bias.

We love xebec only because he was strong.
Other things are secondary.
He is a pirate, and in actuality a terrorist as well. God knows how many he has killed.

People just need a reason to shit on characters that's all.

I will never forgive Oda

Problem I had with Oda if like he's allergic of making good characters in the present anymore (Katakurri was the last). Now he takes more time to build characters in fb (Oden, Harald, Rocks) while shitting on the current and future villains (Kaido, Saturn...)
Edited the post real quick, spoilers aren’t out for that character

Couldn't disagree more.

There are a lot of strong character we don't love. Kaido for example.

We used to trash talk Xebec not long ago until we learned about his family and his motives to be at God Valley.

Garp I agree he does prioritize his family. Can't say the same about his shitty son though.

Roger don't prioritize family at all. He is selfish. He banged a random woman, impregnate her with his devil child and turned himself in to the marines knowing pretty well he would be executed. This is horrible. And the only reason he had a son was because he knew he would die soon anyway and couldn't fulfill the prophecy or something.

Harald is in between those two. Won't say he doesn't care about family but he cares more about his country. That's why he didn't married the woman he truly loved and kind of hide his first born. Anyway, still a shitty attitude and lack of balls from him.

Now Xebec? Holy shit...

He comes from a clan that is pursuit by World Governament and unlike a lot of characters of One Piece, including Luffy, Roger, Garp, Whitebeard, Oden, Hancock, Kuma etc, he wants to do something about it. He is not only living his life despite WG hating him. He wants to break the system and free people, make people's life better. Isn't his island called Paradise? There is a reason for that!

His goal is not selfish world domination but world freedom. He is the essence of One Piece. He is the true Sun God Nika!

I really do not understand what "better" is meant to be in this context.
More likable.

More apealing,Interesting etc.
That's a good avy

Sir Crocodile and Lord Flamingo are bad guys you can root for, not Rocks the retard.
They are piece of shit. I agree they are great villains and characters. But Rocks is actually GOOD as a person.

That's how stories work?

if every character was the same level, then none of them would be special

and oda most likely has his favs too
My point is that he is not making protagonists/good guys as good. Like I said the most likable characters should be Straw Hat Fleet as a whole, Roger the Pirate King, Garp The Hero, Dragon The Most Wanted. And this is far from reality.

He talked about THAT character? I see...

Oda makes characters with mostly gray morals, Fans then divide them into good/bad/neutral/evil/chaotic/etc.

You just make different types of characters for different purposes, fans then divide that into what the "better" character is.

Let me try to explain like this. Those said character that fans like more has some deepness on them. Those others that I'm claiming that should be liked doesn't have.

Luffy is shallow. Roger is shallow.

Xebec is deep.

How can Xebec be the best character ever when we only got to see 11 chapters of him? which some didnt even focus on him but loki

Yea and I'd disagree with that since I think Roger has more depth to him than Xebec does.

There's layers to who Roger is, arguably the most "pirate" like person to exist in the series, while having various goals throughout his life and changes in many steps of the ways. I dont think Xebec even compares to Roger as a character.

Most pirate like?
More so than people like Kidd and Teach?

Dude if you wanna talk about pirate like person, forget the One Piece pirate idea of freedom. Pirate is anything but that. Pirate are simply robbers. They just wanna wealth. Most pirate like person of One Piece is essentially Buggy and no one else. Maybe Kuro. Actually I searched a bit only to find out there were some pirates who actually have some political aspirings like make a pirate nation, global pirate code and things like that. But nevertheless nothing compared to what Roger did during his career. His career wasn't pirate like since he wanted freedom and not power/wealth. And as a person he sucks.

Yes there's layers to who Roger is.

-> He starts off his journey to "flip the world upside down".
-> He sets his eyes on conquering the grandline for whatever reasons, still unknown to us.
-> He's lustful, he's greedy, he's selfish, but also very selfless in certain things
-> After Void Century truth he gets some objective in his mind that we have no idea about at the moment.

He has layers of personality, motives, and changes in goals.

Roger 100% cared about wealth and power. Pirates were outlaws they worked on the basis on not being restricted by authority aka freedom, we're specifically talking about the golden age carribean pirates.

Well yes, he's a pirate... or do you think Xebec is some great guy too just cause he cares about his personal family, while stabbing other kids with swords??

Def more than Kid, Teach is the only reason I stated "arguably".
