Oh they arent being negated, the way I read it is that his haki is so strong that they cant hurt him with their haki. If their haki was negated then they couldnt muster every last ounce of it to kill him. Basically :
Haki too strong to overcome with theirs => Combo attack of all their haki to bypass it.
Its not negation.

What this flashback is making me realise is Roger and Whitebeard deserve moderate flashbacks on how they formed their crews. With Roger we only ever see him meet Rayleigh and now we'll see how they adopt Shanks, but we get nothing else from that.
Whitebeard clearly only starts his crew with Polo and goes from there. How he establishes his 16 divisions and many sub-allies only happens in the next 20 or so years.
Honestly, the same effect for Shanks and Blackbeard too. What were the Impel Down members doing before they were arrested? When did Teach meet the first 4? How did Shanks go around forming his crew after Roger died?
For as much as we know, we know VERY little about the pirate sea between Roger's death and present time.
