I've been saying this for the longest time: Whitebeard had the most destructive power/offence, but Kaido had the strongest defence (durability/endurance). And that is what makes Kaido win 1 on 1.

When WB was introduced, what was the most hype thing about him? It was that he ostensibly had the power "to destroy the world". It wasn't his durability, since even Squard stabbed him, but his ability to destroy shit.

But Kaido's introduction was entirely different. Oda wasn't emphasizing his destructive ability, but his defence. Everyone tried to kill him. No one could. Not even himself. His "hobby" was suicide.

And that is why Kaido always wins in a pure 1 on 1. He just outlasts everyone.

When you go blow for blow, mano a mano/1 on 1, he will just outlast you. That is the difference between humans and "monsters", which is also what Roger called Imu, "black monster".

Honestly Kaido got up very quick after taking oden's finisher. Luffy's haki should be comparable to oden at the very least and Kaido took multiple attacks from him.

After Wano, the only real opponent that has appeared is Imu, in someone’s body.

Basically:

Hody → Doffy → Katakuri/Big Mom (WCI) → Kaidou → Imu


After Kaidou, the next actual arc-level final boss opponent is Imu — not smaller fights like Luffy vs. Kizaru where the intention wasn’t to win outright.

Kaidou was truly the only figure comparable to Joyboy and Imu, and the only one who could present that kind of challenge to them.
Now we just need to see the difference.

Not only does Kaido not have anywhere near as strong of a defense as Xebec, they literally spelled out how to deal with defensive monsters.

That’s why we get into the aspect of durability— defense is different from resistance


When Luffy used Ryou, he could bypass Kaidou’s defense, but his AP at the time only allowed his attacks to penetrate superficially. So even if you have a method to get around Kaidou’s durability, if you don’t have enough AP, you’re not going deep.

Meanwhile, when you bypass Xebec’s defense, any AP is enough to cause serious damage. There is no rule saying your AP must be insanely high to hurt him.
