Character Discussion Garp is a terrible dog shit character

Your moral compass needs tuning asap...seriously...

Noone shits on Garp because he didn't dethrone Imu, it's because he is not even trying and even helping in keeping it on the throne.
His own son Dragon didn't hesitate a second even though he was weak af in GV.
He refused promotions and risked his life in the process because he didn't want to serve the CDs..

It's not like he can dethrone Imu that easily
Ngl I don't understand why people only criticize Garp but not other "good marines" like Smoker or Tashigii
The strenght argument doesn't even work, what can Garp do against Imu exactly?
Garp was still saving people on daily basis by being a marine, people seem to assume every marine is complicit in genocide festival or slavery performed by the CDs, but he didn't even know about the full scale of God Valley event (he just knew CDs were going there for "field trip") despite being a vice-admiral, so chances are that the marines complicit in these actions are a minority of corrupt officers

Meh, I think One Piece fans just have a very black and white view of morality. The likes of Garp and Smoker still do much more good than bad in their life, it's tough luck that the only major organization able to fight pirates is associated with the WG, but it is what it is

I dont think any (nondumb) person makes the argument that flawed characters dont exist.
The problem is because the story grew outside of the bounds oda initially planned its look silly

You cant argue the "well people need a job" or "people need to live in the system" arguments of the real world if we seen in OP you can actually do that in this world.

Garp could be a bounty hunter and would be as effective as he was for all what we seen
He entered GV alone, he ignored his man, and the marine structure doesnt give him anything but a ship (not difficult in one piece to acquiere)

But would him becoming a bounty hunter change anything? Celestial Dragons would still be a thing, Imu would still be a thing. I feel people issue with Garp is that he doesn't storm marijoa and kill everyone there

Did him being a marine change anything beside him more restricted? The current system allows the WG to recruit more marines thanks to garp name
He might have some special people with coby and his troupe he personaly tutalaged but meanwhile thanks to him thousands of new recruit getting brainwashed to shoot civilians on the spot, like in GV

I think the idea is that by serving the WG, he's still helping Imu and co by working for them and the only good he's doing is fighting pirates.

Whereas by becoming a bounty hunter he can do that without lending his considerable power to the WG's cause.

Which I think is fair, but then you'd have to ask the same for any Admiral, especially Akainu who hates how inactive he's forced to be....honestly this is on Oda for not elaborating on bounty hunters properly.

The thing is that Oda is still portraying the "marine as a good organization with a few rotten apples"
It's more of a Oda's issue with making the WG comically evil but still wanting a reformed marine to be a thing in a post-WG world
Since it's a pirate manga, he barely shows the marine doing good shit, but we're clearly supposed to assume that the marine do much more good than bad in general

Sure but for me that falls under the Oda failing as author as i mentioned
