I do agree that sacrificing everything for the good future of kids and his people genuinely the best thing a king can do but holy shit, does harald not see what he is doing? He has great faith but bad execution, boa hancock is great example of protecting its people by "Working" with the devil
Harald saw exactly what he’s doing. He’s taking all the blame of the giants transgressions in the past thousand years onto himself.

Realize what he just saw:
1. He was unable to help his closest friend because of his dream and people
2. He saw his friend was murdered and an island destroyed because a member of a clan committed a crime generations ago.

It’s quite clear why Harald had to go all in. He doesn’t want Elbaf to be the next god valley and he wants his friends loss to mean something.

Sure he may be signing up to work for a devil, but it’s become clear that his people will be safer when they’re no longer this devils enemy. And if he needs to be the sacrificial lamb for his people than he’ll do it. Remember the warlord system didn’t exist yet. At this point only being a WG member will keep them safe.

Massive respect for Harald, because he let Xebec down for his goal, he went all the way in, no half assing. That would make him not helping Xebec be meaningless. He has to make sure now he succeeds no matter what because he even shut down his best friend's request for help which lead to his death.

W for Oda, been a while since he wrote a solid character.
I can't say I'm surprised that so many people don't jive with Harald but this feels incredibly realistic to me

He basically said "I had my chance and I fucked it up so I might as well put my head down and focus on the path I chose to walk"

I can't say I'd do the same thing and I won't argue it was the smartest course of action but I'm also not a king that's trying to affiliate my country with human settlements that have feared giants for 1000 years

Boa is barely even an actual ruler, she's basically a cult leader, like Kuri. The government doesn't care much about Amazon lilly and sort of lets her get away with anything, but they could destroy the country now, especially with the vegacuck technology
They can destory elbaph now and would have dont it by now if not for gaban + SH's so whats the point? Kuja warriors are very famous WG could've easily took advantage of them if not for hancock
Hancock protected her people by being a Shichibukai and then defeating koby + navy, she was unfortunate that BB also invaded...

Yeah god Valley was not satisfying at all, I think it's blatantly clear that Oda just hates drawing fights unless he is forced to do so.
Wano, the only war arc in history where the focus was shifted torwards characters runnning around, close up panels and everything but the actual fights....

We all thought Marineford was just a little teaser for what is about to come, but it was actually the climax of One Piece when it comes to fights :josad:

Nah this is proper dedication to the cause. I hate half assed dedication, I just gained a lot more respect for Harald. After finding out Xebec died he turned it up to 200%, if he didn't do that then he just let his buddy die for nothing. He has to justify why he let Xebec die, he is willing to sacrifice everything for this.

How many times have we heard this, though? There's always the notion that it will be shown next - but this flashback shows that eve for thr most significant event for the old gen, Oda couldn't bother integrating Gaban and Rayleigh into the story to any meaningful degree.
Because Rayleigh and Gaban are far more important as teacher figures/old men than they were in their primes

In Roger's era they were merely the number 2 and 3. They weren't really at the center of any conflict. They were part of great conflicts but they weren't major players

In the present Rayleigh was Luffy's haki teacher that he trained with for 2 years (more time than he's spent with any Strawhat) and Gaban is more than likely directly tied to the location of the last Poneglyph and will (probably) assist the crew when it comes to haki

It's a night and day comparison
