I do wonder about that as I thougth Koby and Boa would end up forming some kind of secret alliance over their shared love/fondness for Luffy, but instead we got what we did and Koby wanting to stop Luffy instead....What the hell Oda and Koby....

We really need to learn about Koby's past and such, why he wants to be a Marine so badly and how he ended up as a slave to Alvida etc. He's gonna have an important heritage/famous family I'm sure.

But man, you might be right too, I can picture Shirahoshi and tsundere Loki, the latter getting convinced by his sweet girl bestie to trust Luffy and that he's the right guy, the "Nika" he's looking for.

Why would Koby need an important past?

We already know how Koby ended up Alvida's slave, he got on the wrong ship.

Koby told us his backstory, which I'd love to get expanded in on full; but we did get something.

He had no friends and no one ever stood up for him, "and more importantly, I never stood up for myself"-Koby

But Zoro and Luffy taught him how to do that; Koby was just an average kid and maybe he admired Marines or maybe being Alvida's slave inspired that in him; and what we saw on that ship in the manga was scarier than the anime portrayal of his time there so it was definitely traumatic.
