Oda clearly respects him, he gave Lucci a better showing than most fans (not myself) anticipated; he continued showing him respect after being scarred by Zoro, down to the Gorosei continuing to consider him one of their best agents.
I'm not sure what you or anyone wanted to be honest given his return was inevitable given the cover story and he was teased throughout the timeskip/still has an open story.
But as said this is a sick fandom with different ideas of what being strong constitutes compared to Oda, so all of his feats will be downplayed and people will act as though it's inherently disrespectful that he isn't match for the protagonist.
I genuinely believe Rob Gucci is one of the characters Oda respects the most in contrast to the fandom;
