Nah FS was unnecessary for sure, it's way too powerful to be used by Top Tiers. Oda is not the guy to write fights that make sense with that power. Now he's stuck with explaining why half the Top Tiers have worse Observation haki than King Kuri or why the other half isn't spamming it 24/7 if King Kuri can.

ACoC was shit, but now we have CoC durability which completely ruins guys like Kaido when Shanks, Garp etc are now more durable than him.

He is just some crippled alcoholic coasting off of Gargling genes, he’s not like an Admiral who obtained his strength through hard work, he’s just a crippled gene merchant. And he’s the weakest Figarland for that very reason. Shamrock was even hyped as more valuable to the WG than Saint Shanks last chapter, and Gargling is a Gorosei so he is literally Saint Shanks’s boss.

Holming didn’t even know how to fight, he was a non-combatant so of course Doffy would be stronger than him. This doesn’t apply to Gargling who was combat trained from a young age as a Holy Knight. Sabo’s father was also a non-combatant. Lol

So yes Saint Shanks is the weakest Figarland and it’s not even close.

I don't know if the anime went for something different, but in the manga what prevented WB from saving Ace was the fresh wound he got from Akainu melting his chest that started hurting, you can see him holding it.
