There is something both complicated and poorly written here
@Roo
The question is why does Harald HAVE to join the WG? He said he wants to have good relations with humans, why can’t he just do that the regular way he was doing when he managed to get several human kingdoms to give his country food. Weren’t all those human countries his ally?
He didn’t make those countries allies with the help of the WG or legitimacy of the WG, he made them allies by actually doing diplomacy the old fashioned way
why not continue doing just this? Why did he feel the need to get legitimacy from the WG? Even though got many sign of how evil they are such as when one of these allies he made before were attacked by the WG simply for not being part of the WG
See what I mean? The bad writing is in Harald’s seeming infatuation with this completely evil organization of the WG simply because they happen to be the largest alliance of human nations
There were other things he could have done. He simply chose the most stupid thing even taking to consideration his “good motives”
the only clever thing about Harald’s story is that it’s a clear parallel to why the Yonko empires exist as they are. They too are alliances of countries outside of the WG. The only difference is that they actually have the standing military power to not allow the WG to just sail into an ally country and take slaves the way Harald’s ally country was getting destroyed
Oda is making a case for why the Yonko exist as military powers instead of just being what Harald was doing making allies but not establishing a military force to protect his allies
