Character Discussion Do you prefer Rayleigh or Gaban as a character?

1 arc was all Gaban needed to completely overshadow rayleigh as a character. Same when it comes to strength and feats.
Both Sanji and Gaban hard carries "wings of the pirate king" title all by themselves while the latter part is just dead weight

They're not gonna like it, but Oda clearly puts more love and effort in characters he can allow to be goofy.

"Pirate Hunter" Zoro and "Dark King" Rayleigh are inherently limited by Oda's willing to engage with.

Just look at their enemies, it's typically the same. Sanji's opponents are typically more interesting and have greater important in role and/or plot.

As a character Gaban is 100% more funny and intressting in the story
He also talks funnier in japanese like the recent chapter where he says they tore the HKs a new one when they trying to retrieve saint shanks lmao @PuckTheGreat

Edit: Do not misunderstand Ray is a cool character too, he is just more generic

Oda does a better job of making characters interesting when he allows them to be a bit goofy.

Cuz title wings of pk is useless except for lanji fans

Its the only straw they can hold on cuz how poor is there character is same for laban .

I do think he sometimes over does it to make character qurik for the ske of quirky but generally i agree. One of my favorite characters for example is Nolan with is chestnutop hair and round goofy nose in contrast with his charcter which was also joyfull instead another "..." copy pasta. And even than those with gags are better like Vergo gag, that persists even beyond his fake persona, is funny cause it contrast to his regular one.
I think this has also to do with the structrure, given how large one piece casts is and how long the manga goes on and will go on alot of character blurr together if they are just generic man the xth propped by fan headcanons differentiating them or give them any meaningful writing

It was already weird that he didn't give a fuck about Ace who was his best friend's son. He cried more for WB ...
During the flashback, his biggest flex is Shakky.

More cooler than Gaban. But Gaban clears personnality wise : more loyal, dual wielding axes, not a pervert nor a weirdo.

Rayleigh is definitely one of the coolest characters in the series, very powerful and a great mentor for Luffy but Gaban's more compelling and I like him a ton as well. Dude is powerful, wise and has being a good father give him a bit more to work with in terms of having to protect Colon even at his own expense and still being a really fun addition to the story. I'd say Gaban, but Rayleigh added quite a lot to Sabaody and the timeskip in terms of what he introduced, helping the crew and teaching Luffy but I wish there was more to him as a character but what we got was fine.

Rayleigh before he was a chicken wing radiated cool, calm, and collected better than any One Piece character.

I'd pick Gaban rn though, he stands out more. He's got a bit of everything going for him.
