In case you missed it, Vergo leg is drawn black against Smoker so we know when Vergo chose to use hardening or not. He chose not to use it against Sanji because he underestimated Sanji if I have to guess.

So you believe "full body" Haki Vergo only uses Haki on his torso and above but not on his legs and below? Idk man it feels silly, for me this is much more a mere aesthetic thing, specially because Oda never cared for drawing CoA for Sanji, not only because he is wearing black for 99% of the time but the flames cover it up (even if we can see a dark shading within his flames in a few panels and cover pages, specially when he is wearing another scheme other than black and when he uses Ifrit jambe). We know for sure that Diable Jambe post-ts needs Haki to make Sanji endure the flames, that is 100% a fact.

Meanwhile against Vergo vs Smoker, drawing Haki is way more important because Smoker is a logia that was untouchable for the whole pre-ts, so it fits Oda draws Haki for both of them for most of their fight (valid to point out they were wearing white clothes btw, Sanji is one of the few characters who wear all dark suits)

With Harald dead and Loki out of the picture, their strongest fighters are Dory and Brogy. The rest are not even worth a mention, Loki's brother was getting beat up by underlings of Doflamingo's underlings.

Even calling it a mid diff solo venture for a single Admiral is pushing it. They get destroyed unfortunately, as cool as the nation sounds. Loki is the key to everything, without him it's nothing in its current state.

That would've been the smarter way to go, but I think Oda wants his cake (make Shanks appear mysterious) and eat it too (reveal that Shanks had to do it to save the impulsive Loki).
