The special item causes Imu to seem to have more abilities than he actually has!
I'm not sure what it is yet, but I've checked my rules for devil fruits and he breaks them.
He has something that doesn't make sense if you think about it with just fruit abilities
It could be something like a soul stone
We've seen these things throughout the story, stuff that creates abilities without including a devil fruit. It's one of those things.
But it's an ancient one! Imu came from a long time ago. That weird little artifact could be anything.
If it's a soul stone, it could explain why he can't be killed, why he can distribute his power, etc. He's acting like Mephisto in the Diablo series.
Something like that would even allow him to create "shades" or phantoms
