Ace was not a rookie pirate he was well established. Akainu referring to Luffy by his father is a reference to him being too weak for the Marineford war. It's a sign of disrespect, he was not even worthy of being called by his own name. You will not see Akainu refer to Luffy like this post timeskip. He's been calling him Strawhat.

@kekaro I'm not saying there can't be a connection between Dragon and Akainh. Just that Marineford is a weak connection at best. It can easily just be Akainu naturally referring to Luffy as Dragon's son for the reasons I stated.

Nope you missed the point. Ace was not seen as a wet behind the ears weakling. He was a quite respected commander of the WBP. Akainu was nipping the future potentials in the bud, does not mean they were in the same exact stage of their careers.
Luffy was supposed to be portrayed as a toddler in the MF war. This was intentional. Oda wants to show his readers that Luffy wasn't ready for this stage. Akainu not even referring to him by his name was intentional disrespect. He was not worthy of it yet.
