Truth is hard to tell what level of friends they were.
If you look at this arc rocks and harald were good friends and look how that work out .
In this story we see rivals like Garp and roger or WB and Roger sit down and talk so maybe it was like that for Imu and joyboy .
We need more info to tell how close they really were.

Hell no. Imu is not the antithesis to Luffy if he was best friends with the previous Luffy. The antithesis to Luffy would never have been best friends with Luffy or Nika in a million years. The final villain of this manga doesn’t want achieve happiness through domination, if you think that’s what makes a final villain, then OP is probably your first series and you know nothing about writing lol.

Imu is the Madara of this manga. You might think he’s the final villain if you don’t know anything about anything, but Madara was simply an EOS big bad and not the final villain of Naruto.

The final villain of this manga is the Sea Devil. Stop denying it, you know it and I know it. The final villain was never best friends with Joy Boy, the final villain is the calamity that caused the war of the first world, not some second era king who was best friends with Luffy’s past life lmfao.

You correctly point out that Blackbeard is the embodiment of the inherited Will villain, since he inherited the Will of Davy Jones (who Imu is still afraid of btw), but then you’re like “well Imu could be this too!”

Proof that you don’t understand how stories are structured. Making Oda create one inherited will villain, but then having the final villain be another inherited will villain, would be like if Oda introduced a second Akainu, Imu is completely redundant by your own interpretation since Blackbeard fits the inherited will trope far better than Imu does. We don’t even know anything about who Imu supposedly inherited his will from? Lol

Under my ending to the story, Imu is a subverted final villain trope distracting from the true, hidden, primordial evil that caused the calamity of the first world. Under your ending to the story, Imu is just “here’s Blackbeard again!” Lol

Blackbeard, Luffy’s true foil and the embodiment of the inherited Will trope, and the Sea Devil, the calamity of the OP world and the primordial causal evil, each fulfill their own unique narrative roles and are not just copy/pasting of the exact same theme. They each fulfill their own separate but equally important roles.
