Honestly this doesn't even make sense. Mythical zoan DFs have mind of their own. So they chose their users more or less. Why would azure dragon DF chose Kaido then?

Maybe there wasn't much choice, either it was eaten by a God's Knight, Ivankov, Katakuri, or Kaido. The DF knew the day to fuse with other soul is nigh, so it has to pick one and well the choice was pretty obvious. Nika was suspected to be eaten by several people prior to Luffy and they couldn't awakened it. Also isn't it was said awakening is a rare condition?

His mythical zoan could make his recovery goes from month to a weeks or two if we're being optimistic, but no way he's healthy now when he was bleeding to his death a few hours before and a doctor literally told us he was in a critical state.
