This is a Gunko backstory masquerading as a Brook backstory and ya’ll been fooled.
What happened was that Oda the creep created Gunko originally as a villain and that’s it, but along the way he came to like the character and therefore decided to go on a different direction and now wants to redeem her so she’s a good person and the only way to do it is through a Straw hat connection.
He then realized there was a part of Brook’s backstory he hasn’t explore - because it wasn’t important before now and found what he’s looking for.
The only reason why we’re getting this now because Oda was disappointed with how his new beloved “Toy” didn’t rank high in the popularity poll and got triggered and angry and now wants to create this forced sob story so we sympathize and rank her high next time.
Also this flashback is like a long hiatus for him where he can travel and enjoy himself.
