To talk about something other then Naruto for a change:

Doesn't it seem odd that the Saiyans were a race of violent, barbarian raiders who supposedly very strong...but actually weren't?

Because King Vegeta was supposed to be the strongest member of their race, but compared to even Dodoria, his power level was a total pushover. Even his son had to abuse that almost dying to get stronger trick to be even close to the level of Dodoria and Zarbon.

Tbf, compared to the vast majority of people in their universe they were pretty strong on average. Raditz was mocked for ONLY being 3-4× stronger than post-OG Draginball Goku and Piccolo. Who could casually obliterate entire moons with any random attack. Lol. They also had the ability to amplify their strength 10x whenever they wanted by using their Oozaru form. Which would have made even Saiyan Saga era Vegeta stronger than Captain Ginyu if he used it, mind you (which is probably part of the reason Vegeta was so arrogant).

.....there's also all that Yamoshi nonsense, if you want to go into the Saiyans originally being much stronger than we saw them in modern day? 😅

Well, we do have established power levels and such.

And King Vegeta only had one of about 10,000. But Dodoria and Zarbon was 22,000 and 23,000.

Yeah, but Oozaru King Vegeta would be 100,000 is kinda my point. Pretty sure even Ginyu was only 120,000. The Saiyans weren't the strongest, not even close (Freeza at his weakest was stronger than their absolu strongest by a wide margin), but there weren't many GROUPS of people stronger than them. I think their reputation was deserved? Especially given their crazy potential, even if nobody in recent memory had lived up to it.

Well, that's more on Toriyama just completely ditching the Oozaru concept after Goku VS Vegeta until like goddamn GT.
